Klapa Kaše

About us

Honouring the ancient song of the Dubrovnik nobility and listening closely to the musical pulse of its homeland, klapa Kaše was formed in Dubrovnik in early 2007. It takes its name from the Kaše breakwater, which lies in front of the old city harbour, and it symbolises the klapa as a breakwater of the polyphonic singing of the Dubrovnik region.

With four victories at the most prestigious klapa festival, the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa in Omiš (2012 – overall winner, 2014, 2018, 2026), the klapa has become one of the most awarded klapa groups in Croatia. The klapa has performed at festivals in Perast, Blato on Korčula, Makarska, Kaštel Kambelovac and Opatija, winning first place from both the jury and the audience at each of them.

Alongside numerous concerts across Croatia, the klapa has so far given a number of notable concerts in Canada, Morocco, Sweden, Italy, France, Monaco, Austria, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Performing its programme with traditional instruments (mandolins, mandola, guitars, double bass, tambourine and flute), klapa Kaše has also appeared at Croatian popular music festivals: the klapa performed on its own at the Split Festival in 2016 and 2023. At the Evening of Dalmatian Chanson in Šibenik in 2015, with the song “Petrunjela”, it won the audience award as well as the awards for best arrangement and best debutant, while at the same festival in the following years, with the songs “Godine su brodovi”, “Kad Stradun zanoća”, “Ljubavi moja” and “Da mi je znati gdje spavaš”, it won audience awards as well as awards for best singer-songwriter work, most complete musical work and best lyrics.

The klapa has so far recorded five albums: “Rego” (2013), “Tragom Republike” (2014), “Tezoro” (2019), which was nominated for the Porin music award in 2020, as well as the album “Misa svetog Vlaha” (2021), an a cappella work in 9 movements; and the album “Kolendo, kolendo, veselo. Veselo” (2023), which the klapa recorded together with the HRT Tamburica Orchestra.

In 2022 klapa Kaše gave the premiere of the Suite for klapa and orchestra “Grad plovi” accompanied by the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra.

In 2022 the klapa premiered “Million of strange shadow”, music by Vicko Dragojević to a text by William Shakespeare, one of the first projects by a Croatian klapa in the English language.

The klapa has also worked with the Marin Držić Theatre, taking part in the play “Maškarate ispod kuplja”, directed by Paolo Tišljarić (2021).

Gathering forgotten songs of the Dubrovnik region, klapa Kaše, accompanied by indigenous instruments such as the lijerica or the lute, has also launched the concert programme “Tragom Republike”, in which, with a superb a cappella performance, it has shown all the splendour of the Dalmatian klapa song, protected by UNESCO.
